Context
Written in 1787 and ratified in 1788, the Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation, which had proven too weak to govern effectively. The Framers designed it to balance federal authority with individual liberty, creating a government strong enough to function but constrained enough to preserve freedom. The first three articles establish the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, while the Bill of Rights (added in 1791) explicitly protects individual freedoms.
