CivicsPath aims to be usable by everyone preparing for U.S. naturalization, including people with disabilities. This page explains our current accessibility commitments, known gaps, and how to report issues.
Standards we target
We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA for both the marketing website (civicspath.app) and the study app (study.civicspath.app). Concretely:
- Sufficient color contrast (4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text)
- Keyboard navigability throughout
- Screen reader support (semantic HTML, ARIA where needed, no text-as-image)
- Resizable text up to 200% without loss of functionality
- Visible focus indicators on all interactive elements
- Captions or transcripts for any audio content (the question audio includes a synced text answer)
What's working
- Marketing site: server-rendered semantic HTML, full keyboard navigation, no traps. Tested on macOS VoiceOver and NVDA on Windows
- Study app: tab-through study sessions, large-tap-target flashcard buttons, audio always paired with text answer, Calm Down Mode accessible from any screen
- Cookie banner: keyboard-operable, can be dismissed without selecting analytics
- Forms: every input has a label; errors are announced to assistive tech
Known limitations
- The mock interview's audio playback uses HTML5
<audio>controls; we have not added a custom transcript view yet (transcript is shown in the conversation pane on completion) - Some font sizes on dense screens (mock interview transcript, admin dashboards) may be tight; planned to address in a future update
- The marketing site's home hero phone mockup is decorative; assistive tech reads it as such, but its visual content (sample question card) is not separately announced. The 128 questions are accessible via /study/civics-test.
How to report a barrier
If you encounter an accessibility issue, please email accessibility@civicspath.app with:
- The page or feature where the issue occurs (URL helps)
- What assistive technology you're using (screen reader, voice control, magnifier, etc.)
- What you expected to happen vs. what actually happened
We aim to acknowledge accessibility reports within 2 business days and prioritize fixes that block use of the study app.
Alternative formats
If a CivicsPath feature is not currently accessible to you and you need an alternative way to access study material, email us. We can:
- Provide audio recordings of any question or answer in MP3
- Send the 128-question list as a plain-text file
- Walk you through using CivicsPath via screen-share if that's helpful
Continuous improvement
Accessibility is a moving target. We run automated checks (axe-core) on every deploy and aim to do a manual screen-reader pass each quarter. If you suggest a fix and we can implement it, we will.
