Context
Lincoln took office in March 1861 as southern states were seceding. His refusal to allow the Union to dissolve led to four years of civil war. The Emancipation Proclamation, effective January 1, 1863, shifted the war's purpose to include ending slavery. Lincoln was assassinated in April 1865, days after the war's end. His Gettysburg Address (1863) remains one of the most quoted speeches in American history, redefining the war as a test of whether democracy itself could survive.
