Context

The Twenty-Fifth Amendment, ratified in 1967, formalized the succession process that had been customary since 1841. It also created procedures for temporary transfers of power during presidential disability. Nine Vice Presidents have ascended to the presidency: eight after a President's death and one after a resignation (Gerald Ford in 1974, following Richard Nixon's resignation).
