Context
European settlers arrived between the early 1600s and late 1700s for diverse reasons. Puritans fled religious persecution in England; Germans sought economic stability after the Thirty Years' War; indentured servants traded labor for passage and land. Unlike most of Europe, colonial America offered social mobility and, for many, the chance to own property—though these opportunities were denied to enslaved Africans and often taken from Indigenous peoples.
