Context
Ratified in 1791, the Bill of Rights comprises the first ten amendments to the Constitution. James Madison drafted them to address concerns that the original Constitution did not explicitly protect individual liberties. These amendments limit what the federal government (and, after the Fourteenth Amendment, state governments) can do to restrict personal freedoms.
