Context

Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration was approved by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. It laid out grievances against King George III and asserted the colonists' natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. While it declared independence, the Revolutionary War continued until 1783, when Britain formally recognized American independence in the Treaty of Paris.
