Context
Before 1870, most states restricted voting to white men. The 15th Amendment was one of three Reconstruction amendments designed to establish civil rights for formerly enslaved people. However, many Southern states used literacy tests, poll taxes, and violent intimidation to prevent Black men from voting until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Women of all races could not vote until the 19th Amendment in 1920.
