Context
France gave the statue to the United States in 1886 as a symbol of friendship and shared democratic ideals. Originally called "Liberty Enlightening the World," it served as a beacon for millions of immigrants arriving at nearby Ellis Island from 1892 to 1954. The statue became a National Monument in 1924 and remains one of America's most recognizable symbols of freedom.
