Context

The Chief Justice leads the Supreme Court's conferences, assigns opinion-writing responsibilities when in the majority, and administers the presidential oath of office. President George W. Bush nominated Roberts in 2005 following the death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist. As the head of the judicial branch, the Chief Justice also oversees the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts and the Federal Judicial Center.
