Context
In June 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea, prompting the United Nations Security Council to authorize military action. President Truman committed U.S. forces without a formal declaration of war, calling it a "police action." The conflict lasted three years, ended in stalemate along the 38th parallel, and never formally concluded — only an armistice was signed in 1953.
