Context

Written in 1787–1788 by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay under the pseudonym 'Publius,' these essays appeared in New York newspapers during intense ratification debates. They remain the most authoritative explanation of the Constitution's original meaning and are still cited by courts and scholars today. New York ratified the Constitution by a narrow margin in 1788, partly due to their influence.
