Speaking Test

There's no fixed word list. The officer just listens.

Speaking is assessed throughout the entire interview — when you answer civics questions, when you respond to N-400 questions about your background, when you ask the officer to repeat or clarify. There is no separate “speaking section.”

What officers listen for

Four things that signal you understand everyday English.

  • Can you answer a civics question with a single word or short phrase?
  • Can you confirm or correct a detail from your N-400 application?
  • Can you ask for a question to be repeated when you don't understand?
  • Can you express a basic idea without help from a translator?
What officers don't grade

The bar is lower than most applicants think.

  • Native fluency. Accents are fine.
  • Perfect grammar. Minor mistakes are accepted.
  • Vocabulary range. Basic words are enough.
  • Speed. You can pause as long as you need.
What does count against you

Common speaking mistakes that DO matter.

  • Going completely silent for >30 seconds without saying “Could you repeat that?”
  • Refusing to attempt to answer because you're not 100% sure
  • Switching to a translator without permission
How CivicsPath helps

Practice the conversation, not just the facts.

Our N-400 mock interview rehearses everyday English in the actual interview format — small talk, biographical questions, civics questions, follow-ups. The bi-weekly cadence gets you comfortable answering, not just reading. By the time you walk into your real interview, the format is familiar and your speaking voice is warm.
