Context

King emerged as a national leader during the 1955–1956 Montgomery Bus Boycott and became the face of the civil rights movement through the 1960s. He delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech at the 1963 March on Washington, advocating for a society where people are judged by character rather than race. He was assassinated in Memphis in 1968. Congress later established Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday in his honor.
