Context
Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990, claiming historical territorial rights and seeking control of Kuwaiti oil fields. The United Nations authorized military action, and Operation Desert Storm began in January 1991 with a coalition of 35 nations. The ground war lasted only 100 hours, ending with Iraqi withdrawal and a ceasefire in February 1991.
