Context
The Revolution began with armed conflict in Massachusetts in April 1775 and formally started with the Declaration of Independence in July 1776. Key military turning points included the victory at Saratoga in 1777, which secured French alliance, and the harsh winter at Valley Forge in 1777–1778, which tested the Continental Army's resolve. The war effectively ended with British General Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in October 1781.
