Context

Eleven Southern states seceded after Abraham Lincoln's 1860 election, fearing federal restrictions on slavery. The war began when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861 and ended with Union victory in April 1865. Over 620,000 soldiers died, and the conflict led directly to the abolition of slavery through the Thirteenth Amendment.
