Context

The war began when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861. President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, declaring freedom for enslaved people in Confederate states. Turning-point battles at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in July 1863 shifted momentum to the Union. General Sherman's destructive march through Georgia in 1864 crippled Confederate infrastructure. General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, effectively ending the war. Days later, John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln at Ford's Theatre.
